Anne Arundel County's Historic Preservation Planning Section undertakes research on our historic sites and places to bring more information to the public. 

We work closely with local non-profits to study and help preserve the County's significant historic and archaeological sites. See below for a number of resources for you to learn more about your County's history!

Maryland Archaeology: Unearthing Forgotten History - Check out this short video that explains all you ever wanted to know about archaeology in Anne Arundel County! Find out how you can get involved by watching.

A Race Against Time: Maryland Archaeology and the Quest to Recover History - One-third of archaeological sites in Anne Arundel County are threatened by weather and other natural hazards. Find out what measures are being taken and how you can help by watching.

A Native American Village - Archaeological Exploration on County Lands - The County has been working with volunteers and students over the past three years to explore a fascinating Native American Archaeological Site located on the County-owned Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary in Lothian. Learn more about what the team has found- and what we have found out.

The Archaeology of the Patuxent River - This virtual presentation was given in honor of Archaeology Month in April 2022. Take a virtual journey along the Patuxent River with archaeologists from Howard, Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties in Maryland. Learn about the various archaeological resources found throughout this watershed.

Preserving Anne Arundel County Beach History - The shorelines of the County were once dotted with hundreds of beach resorts and vacation communities in the first half of the 20th century. These developments (some which evolved into year-round communities, while others are lost to time) made Anne Arundel County a popular tourist destination before the construction of the Bay Bridge. These beach resorts left a lasting legacy on the County's landscape and development patterns.

Resurrecting Histories: Cemeteries of the Four Rivers Heritage Area - This symposium took place on June 8, 2019 in Galesville and featured experts in cemetery research, conservation, and preservation - watch the video here.

Woodwardville Historic District - Watch this excellent video on a National Register Historic District in Anne Arundel County. This video was created by the Woodwardville Preservation Society, Inc. with support from the Arts Council and the Cultural Resources Division.
