Reclaiming a Pet

Learn about the process and requirements for reclaiming a pet that is in the care and custody of Animal Care & Control.

If a pet has been picked up by Animal Care & Control, it is now safe and cannot fall victim to the hazards faced while at large. The pet will be held at Animal Care & Control for five (5) business days unless extremely aggressive, seriously injured or suffering.  Owners should come to Animal Care & Control to look for their lost pet/missing pets as soon as possible and ensure this is within the holding period.

How to Reclaim a Pet

If the pet is at Animal Care & Control, the owner will need to be prepared to complete the following steps:

  1. Present a valid Photo ID
  2. Provide proof of ownership

If you are an Anne Arundel County resident and your dog or cat is at least 6 months old but does not have a current county license, one will be issued when you come to reclaim your pet. See the licensing page for the applicable licensing fees.
