Active Projects
Project Description
This project preserves and restores the 1870 house of Henry Wilson. In 1865, Henry and Kitty Wilson, both formerly enslaved persons, purchased two acres of land in what is now Galesville from the owner of Tulip Hill, a waterfront plantation . They were among only a few African Americans to own land at this time in the State of Maryland. By 1870, the Wilsons had built a two-story, three bay, braced frame house on Main Street, the road leading into Galesville. Inside, it had upscale details like a carved wooden banister on the staircase and wainscoting in all the rooms.
The renovation will stabilize and preserve the building structure and grounds. The project adds a fully-accessible deck, designed to mimic the dimensions of a lost wing of the house. The first floor windows in the home will be converted to display windows to permit Park visitors to look into the house from the deck to learn about the Wilsons and life in Galesville in the 1987s.
