As a part of its Preservation Stewardship Program, Anne Arundel County's Historic Preservation Planning Section, in partnership with The Lost Towns Project, offers an academic internship program for students of archaeology and historic preservation. The County's team of professional archaeologists, preservationists, and historians, welcome advanced high school and college interns to join us. Under the teams’ professional guidance, students can learn the ropes and find out if a career in archaeology or historic preservation is right for them. Often, credit can be arranged in cooperation with your academic institution. We also welcome researchers, graduate students, and experienced undergraduates who wish to use the County collections for a thesis or other project.

Anne Arundel County’s Historic Preservation Planning Section in conjunction with The Lost Towns Project is offering  two (2) unpaid internship positions in Laboratory Methods and Collections Management. Undergraduate  and Graduate students are invited to apply, and must pursue academic credit through their institution. The internship will be based in Edgewater, MD with some travel required.

  • Participate in artifact processing (washing, labeling, cataloging, etc.) at the Anne Arundel County Archaeology Laboratory in Edgewater, MD (40% of time);
  • Conduct collections assessment of existing archaeological collections in Edgewater and Glen Burnie, MD, and record them in a collections management database (40% of time);
  • Attend field trips to regional archaeological sites, labs, and curation facilities (10% of time)
  • Work with other interns and volunteers as needed;
