Patient Art and Memory at Crownsville Hospital
Art therapy played an important role in patient care at Crownsville Hospital, and patients created the artwork shown here. Rescued from the now-defunct hospital, this display honors the memories of Crownsville Hospital residents by offering a brief window into their lives. This is their hearts, their minds, their creativity, and their expression. While little is known about the artist or the artwork, it’s understood that art therapy promotes self-expression. According to the National Library of Medicine, it “uses integrative techniques to captivate the soul, body, and mind in ways that verbal expression alone doesn't appear to.” Where words fail, art can offer patients a safe way to explore difficult topics and emotions.
