Overview
The Department of Public Works is upgrading water meters across Anne Arundel County to a modern system known as Advanced Metering Infrastructure, or AMI. AMI puts your water use in your hands by giving customers the ability to see water consumption in near real time, providing more timely insight into your habits so you can make informed decisions about how water is used at your home or business. The AMI capable meters provide more precise meter readings, which can spot leaks earlier, support more accurate billing, and improve customer service.
The new meters securely record water use throughout the day and transmit usage information to the County, eliminating the need for manual meter readings. Customers will be able to view their water use through an online portal, making it easier to monitor usage and identify potential leaks before they become costly problems.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Installation is simple. Upgrading most meters takes a reasonable amount of time and involves only a brief interruption to residential water services. You’ll receive advance notice before work begins in your area.
- This is a phased rollout. Pre‑installation activities begin in 2026, with meter installations rolling out by area over multiple years.
