Annapolis, MD (October 9, 2026) – Following its unanimous approval by the Anne Arundel County Council in June 2026, Anne Arundel County launched today the new $150,000 House of Worship and Nonprofit Security Grant Pilot Program. Included in the Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) budget, the funding provides direct financial assistance to local faith-based organizations, houses of worship, and nonprofits at risk of hate crimes, antisemitism, and targeted threats.
"Every resident in Anne Arundel County deserves to feel safe, protected, and welcome when gathering to worship or serve our community," said County Executive Steuart Pittman. "By launching this pilot grant program, we are taking a direct step to stand against hate, ease the financial strain of safety measures, and help our faith-based institutions and local nonprofits invest in the protection they need."
“The County Council collaborated and took a bipartisan approach to ensure this pilot security grant program funding was included in this year’s budget,” said Anne Arundel County Council Chair Julie Hummer. “I look forward to seeing how these resources provide peace of mind and safety for our communities of faith and non-profits.”
The $150,000 allocation is specifically targeted to aid local faith-based organizations, houses of worship, and nonprofits facing heightened risks. Facilities such as local houses of worship, religious schools, and community centers often incur tens of thousands of dollars annually in physical guard services and facility upgrades. These funds will directly assist institutions in offsetting essential security investments, including physical security infrastructure, equipment upgrades, and operational expenses such as professional security personnel.
"Our goal at the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is to build resilience across every corner of our county, and ensuring our community organizations have the necessary security safeguards is vital to that mission," said Preeti Emrick, OEM Director. “I look forward to working directly with applicant organizations through this rollout to guide them through the process, provide expert safety technical assistance, and allocate these critical resources effectively."
Program guidelines, application forms, and eligibility details were actively developed by the county in collaboration with the County Council and community advocates, and are now available through the Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management. The application process is structured to ensure equitable distribution of funds.
