Edgewater, MD (September 17, 2026) – Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman, the Department of Recreation and Parks, and the Resilience Authority of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, joined the Wohlsen Construction team on site to celebrate the start of major construction and structural expansion of the Edgewater Community Center.
Construction began this month, September 2026, with overall building completion expected in July 2027. Following the completion of the main structure, Phase 2 will deliver additional surrounding site improvements.
“After a whole lot of community engagement and planning, I’m thrilled that we are now raising the roof on the old Giant building to create the indoor recreation and community space that Edgewater and South County have needed for so long,” said County Executive Steuart Pittman. “Our residents, our Recreation and Parks team, and our Resilience Authority are building something here that will make life better for all ages for many generations.”
The design-build project team—comprising Wohlsen Construction, Becker Morgan Group, and Cap Ex Advisory Group—is executing construction in alignment with the Issued For Construction (IFC) documents and feedback gathered during public information sessions.
“Today’s targeted demolition is the first major step of the physical transformation,” said Jessica Leys, Director of the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks. “Our goal is to maximize recreational opportunities while not significantly increasing the building's footprint. We are designing a space with high-impact amenities that encourages year-round wellness and activity for all people, and we can’t wait to see the community fill these rooms in 2027.”
Additionally, the Resilience Authority of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County serves as a key partner in delivering the facility through sustainable, climate-forward construction practices.
“The Edgewater Recreation Center is a great example of what can be accomplished when local and state partners work together around a shared community vision,” said Matt Fleming, Executive Director of the Resilience Authority. “In addition to the County’s continued investment, support from the State of Maryland and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources through Program Open Space has been instrumental in our ability to work with our County partners to advance this project while maximizing the impact of local dollars.”
Once complete, the Edgewater Community Center will feature an elevated roofline to accommodate a state-of-the-art gymnasium, indoor playground, and elevated walking track, alongside building and energy performance standards and multi-generational, accessible public spaces designed for residents of all ages.
