Statement from Chief Awad on Police Officer Charged:

“I find the allegations against Lieutenant Ploor concerning. We hold our officers accountable to the highest levels of professional standards and conduct.

As this case progresses through the judicial system, we will continue to cooperate with the Office of the State’s Attorney.

As is standard practice, we will conduct an administrative investigation once this case has been adjudicated.”


Office of Professional Standards

On April 14, 2026, the Anne Arundel County Police Department - Office of Professional Standards was notified that a police officer was involved in an incident unrelated to their duties, which led to a criminal investigation into allegations of assault. Following the investigation, the Anne Arundel County Police Department Criminal Investigation Division sought charges from the District Court Commissioner. On April 16, 2026, the District Court Commissioner issued a criminal summons charging the officer with First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, and Reckless Endangerment. The officer is identified as Lieutenant Matthew Ploor, a 20-year veteran of the Anne Arundel County Police Department assigned to the Bureau of Administration. Lieutenant Ploor is suspended without pay during the Internal Affairs Section administrative investigation.


Northern District

Serious Crash - Brooklyn Park

On April 16, 2026, at approximately 5:20 a.m., Northern District officers responded to a collision involving a Kawasaki motorcycle and a Honda Pilot on Ritchie Highway at 9th Avenue. Once on scene, the Crash Reconstruction Team was requested.

A preliminary investigation revealed the Honda was traveling southbound on Ritchie Highway when the driver attempted to make a U-turn at 9th Avenue. The Kawasaki was traveling southbound on Ritchie Highway and struck the Honda from the rear.

The operator of the Kawasaki was transported to an area hospital with life threatening injuries. The operator and passengers of the Honda were not injured in the collision. The Crash Reconstruction Team processed the scene and will conduct the investigation.
