Millersville, MD (January 14, 2026) – The Anne Arundel County Police Department today announced significant progress in reducing violent crime across the county throughout the 2025 calendar year.

This achievement is a testament to the department's multi-faceted strategy, which includes proactive patrol work, the implementation of data-driven strategies to rapidly identify crime patterns and coordinate resources, and the responsible use of technology. Key to this success was the utilization of resources such as drones and automated license plate reader technology with assistance from the agency’s centralized information and technology hub, the Real Time Information Center (RTIC)—along with thorough follow-up investigations by detectives and crime analysts and robust community partnerships.

Significant year-over-year comparison findings include substantial reductions across several crime categories:

  • 47% reduction in citizen robberies (102 vs. 192)
  • 46% reduction in commercial robberies (33 vs. 61)
  • 30% reduction in stolen autos (1,220 vs. 1,751)
  • 27% reduction in carjackings (16 vs. 22)
  • 26% reduction in non-contact shootings (76 vs. 103)
  • 19% reduction in contact shootings (13 vs. 16)
  • 13% reduction in sex offenses/rapes (139 vs. 159)

"The modern policing strategies implemented by Chief Awad and the Anne Arundel County Police Department are making our communities safer," said County Executive Steuart Pittman. "Their partnerships with other county agencies have created an integrated approach to address the social determinants of violence like poverty, hate, and mental health. This work is the key to long-term public safety.”

The department’s investigations also included 11 murders in 2025, one more than the previous year's total which was the lowest number of murders recorded in more than a decade. Throughout the year, the agency further seized 275 guns for evidentiary purposes.

“I am extremely proud of our men and women who remain steadfast in ensuring the safety of Anne Arundel County," said Anne Arundel County Chief of Police Amal E. Awad. "Our department continues to be innovative and forward-thinking in our approach to reducing crime while relying upon vital, long-standing community partnerships. Utilizing advanced technology has also contributed vastly to our increased interagency coordination and case solvability. These collaborative efforts have translated to a safer community for all who choose Anne Arundel County as their home, workplace, or favorite place to visit.”
