The Mayo Tank Replacement Project is an Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works initiative to upgrade aging septic tanks and related electrical components throughout the Mayo Water Reclamation Subdistrict.
Project Background
A Long-Term Infrastructure Investment for the Mayo Peninsula
Many of the existing tanks were installed in the 1980s and are nearing or have exceeded their expected service life. To address this, Anne Arundel County is implementing a phased replacement program that is expected to span approximately 12 years, with tank replacements beginning in mid-2026.
This long-term approach allows the County to complete the work responsibly, minimize disruption to homeowners, and maintain reliable service across the peninsula.
Why This Project Is Necessary
The Mayo Peninsula sewer system operates differently from traditional public sewer systems. Homes are served by County-installed Septic Tank Effluent Pump (STEP) systems or gravity-fed septic tanks that connect to the Mayo Water Reclamation Facility.
With more than 3,300 active connections and some tanks over 35 years old, proactive replacement is necessary to:
- Prevent failures
- Protect waterways
- Ensure continued service for residents
Modernizing the STEP System
This project replaces older fiberglass tanks with modern HDPE STEP tanks designed for durability and long-term performance. It will also update electrical control panels to ensure operation.
Replacement occurs in phases over a multi-year timeline to minimize disruption and manage resources effectively.
