LOCATION: Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, 1361 Wrighton Road, Lothian, MD 20711
WORK SCHEDULE: 3-4 days per week (8-hour days). Shifts include weekends and holidays.
Main Duties
- Patrol and enforce county codes and park regulations at Sanctuary properties.
- Assist with maintenance tasks of Sanctuary properties (mowing, cleaning buildings, trash pick up, etc.)
- Support maintenance staff with the inspection and maintenance of trails, boardwalks, and other structures.
- Conduct public programming and help with special events.
- Support duties at the Visitor Center when needed (greet and orient visitors to the park, answer phones, collect park admission fees, etc.)
- Provide support with the management and implementation of public programs, including creating content for the county program guide, entering programs into ActiveNet, communicating with program participants, coordinating group program requests, etc.
- Provide support with the planning and implementation of stewardship activities (invasive species control, trash pick-ups, garden maintenance, etc.)
- Provide support with student environmental education programs (i.e., Classrooms in the Field, summer camps).
- Help develop outreach content/products (flyers, social media content, newsletter articles, etc.)
Qualifications
- B.S. or working toward a degree in Environmental Science, natural resource management, park and recreation management, biology, forestry, or related fields;
- Applicants must have a valid driver's license, be able to pass a background process, and become first aid/CPR certified soon after hiring.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite products;
- Experience communicating and working with the public;
- Experience or willingness to learn the use of maintenance equipment (i.e., mowers, chainsaws, tractors, etc.)
- Experience in nature interpretation;
- Willing to work outside and under strenuous weather conditions;
- Experience enforcing rules and regulations in a natural setting is a plus;
- A demonstrated passion and commitment for the natural world is a must!
About Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary
Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary is a 1700-acre Natural Area in southern Anne Arundel County, Maryland and it is operated by the County’s Department of Recreation and Parks. The Sanctuary is in the tidal reaches of the Patuxent River, and is composed of different habitats including open water, tidal freshwater marshes, forested wetlands, creeks, meadows, and pine and sand barrens, which provide safe habitat to numerous plants and wildlife. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary is located 20 miles east of Washington, DC, and 18 miles south of Annapolis.
