NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

The position of Floating Assistant Director for the Anne Arundel County senior activity centers is a part time contractual position within the Department of Aging and Disabilities. This position assists in covering and directing the operations of 8 senior activity centers on a regular basis rotating from one to another based on need for coverage, assists with programs and activities scheduled in the center, pulls reports and maintains data in the client database system, and provides support for events in all senior activity centers. This position requires evening and weekend hours. The position reports to the Assistant Director of Disability and Community Services.  


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

  • Work with senior activity center staff and volunteers; provide effective communication, support and development to staff and volunteers while covering at centers.
  • Show sensitivity to cultural, language, and economic differences. This position requires a high degree of daily contact with the public at large, who present a variety of personalities and dispositions.  
    Perform outreach to seniors, their families, and provide public information about available programs and services to community groups and aging related organizations.
  • Open and secure buildings in the absence of the senior activity center staff.
  • Interact with center staff and volunteers, Department of Aging and Disabilities staff, center 501c3 groups, senior participants, their families, county, City of Annapolis, state government and community organizations, and the general public.
  • Coordinate senior activity center facility and grounds management.  
  • Perform other duties as necessary and represent the Department of Aging and Disabilities and Anne Arundel County in a positive and professional manner.  
  • Must be a team player willing to take on special assignments or unanticipated activities.  
  • This position requires that the employee be able to move tables, chairs, and audio visual equipment. On occasions, must serve in the absence of a custodian.
  • Position can be assigned to manage any one of the senior activity centers for coverage purposes.  
  • Demonstrated an understanding of creating an accessible environment for individuals with disabilities.


KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of senior activity center operations.

Considerable knowledge of organization and office management.

Ability to assume responsibility for special assignments and to perform them in accordance with minimal instructions.

Ability to develop and evaluate policies and procedures.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.

Have transportation available for covering at all 8 senior activity center locations.

Have the ability to work evenings and weekends as needed


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in public or business administration, gerontology or a related field, and two or more years of experience in senior center administration or office management.

NOTE: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in public or business administration, gerontology or related field may be substituted with four (4) or more years of experience working with older adults in a senior center, activities department, or recreation setting will be considered.

Experience with Google Suite, and data tracking programs/client databases.
