Position Description

The Anne Arundel County Police Department is seeking a passionate, organized, and wellness-driven individual to join our Wellness Unit as a Contractual Wellness Coach. This role is crucial to supporting our department's mission to promote the overall wellbeing of our officers and staff in line with 21st Century Policing goals.  The Police Wellness Coach is assigned to the Community Relations Division of the Police Department and will fall under the supervision of the Police Wellness Officer.

Job Responsibilities

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct wellness coaching and physical training for officers, recruits, cadets, explorers, and applicants.
  • Lead educational sessions on financial, spiritual, and family wellness
  • Support and grow the department's Peer Support Program.
  • Distribute monthly newsletters and create engaging social media wellness content
  • Track and analyze wellness data and engagement metrics
  • Collaborate with training academy staff for in-service and recruit development
  • Grant management functions include applying for and managing grant funds awarded to the Police Department for Officer Wellness.
  • Communication functions to include verbal and electronic correspondence with the wellness officer and other members of the community relations division.
  • Identifying and building relationships with community wellness organizations to assist the department’s officer wellness program.
  • Collecting and analyzing data of officer wellness initiatives to develop and recommend strategies to enhance the Police Department’s officer wellness.
  • Represent the Police Department to other County departments, elected officials, outside agencies, and the community; represent the County and the Police Department in a courteous, professional manner.
  • Have knowledge of the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Police Department.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Background in fitness, mental health, coaching, or a related field
  • Understanding of law enforcement or high-stress environments preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Organized, self-motivated, and professional with a high degree of discretion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and electronically.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations.
  • Ability to establish rapport with police/law enforcement personnel, supervisors and command staff.
  • Ability to speak in front of small/large groups.
  • Ability to use a computer to include Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment to include: a personal computer, copy machine, telephone and voicemail.
  • Ability to operate various audio-visual equipment such as video cameras, audio recorders, projectors, televisions and screens for presentations.
  • Ability to keep records and prepare written reports.
  • Effectively coordinate and schedule a variety of activities and projects.
  • Prepare clear and concise oral presentations and written reports.
  • Interpret and apply pertinent laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Understand and act in accordance with County and Police Department policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends and holidays as needed to accommodate job responsibilities.

Experience and Training

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: 

Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience analyzing, developing, and implementing policies and programs, preferably in physical fitness and law enforcement officer wellness. 


Training: 

Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college with major course work in Athletic training, exercise physiology, exercise science, fitness, exercise management, kinesiology or another related field. 

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid State of Maryland driver's license.
