The Department of Aging and Disabilities Celebrates Older Americans Month 2025

Annapolis, MD (May 12, 2025) - The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities is pleased to recognize May as Older Americans Month (OAM). The Department of Aging and Disabilities’ mission is to provide services and programs for older adults that allow them to stay healthy, remain independent, and be engaged and connected in their communities. For Older Americans Month, the Department of Aging and Disabilities will honor and celebrate the contributions of older adults in Anne Arundel County.

Every May, older adults across the nation are recognized for their contributions to their communities and society. Older adults offer insight and experience that benefit everyone. While raising families and building careers, older adults continue to give back to their neighborhoods, serving as volunteers, employees, employers, educators, mentors, advocates, and so much more.

This year’s theme is Flip the Script On Aging. It is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the many ways older adults can remain in and be involved with their communities. This year’s theme encourages a shift in how society perceives and interacts with older adults and encourages recognizing their continued value, contributions, and the diverse experiences that come with aging, rather than focusing on decline and stereotypes, with a goal of promoting a more positive, inclusive, and realistic understanding of aging.

Older adults are active, engaged, and continue to contribute to the economy, our communities, and our culture. They guide our younger generations and carry forward abundant cultural and historical knowledge, through their wealth of life experience and wisdom. They improve our communities through intergenerational relationships and activities, community service, civic engagement, and mentorship. We all benefit when people of all ages, abilities, beliefs, cultures, and backgrounds have the opportunity to contribute to society and live independently.

"Older Americans Month is an opportunity for everyone, including our Department, to recognize and applaud older adults and their tremendous contributions to communities everyday," said Karrisa Kelly, director of the Department of Aging and Disabilities. "The Department of Aging and Disabilities will continue to empower our older adults to age unbound by stereotypes and provide programs and services that support healthy, independent, and fulfilling lives.”
