GLEN BURNIE, MD – September 16, 2026 – The Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works Bureau of Utility Operations received National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) Peak Performance Awards for perfect National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) permit compliance at County Water Reclamation Facilities (WRF).
“While our water reclamation facilities operate largely out of public view, the critical work done within them is fundamental to safeguarding our environment and public health,” said County Executive Steuart Pittman. “Earning this 2026 NACWA Peak Performance Award highlights the exceptional dedication and expertise of our plant operators, engineers, and support staff. Their commitment ensures Anne Arundel County remains a safer, cleaner, and more resilient community for everyone.”
The Annapolis, Broadneck, Broadwater and Cox Creek WRFs each earned NACWA Peak Performance Platinum Awards, which honor treatment plants that have maintained perfect compliance without any NPDES permit violations for at least five consecutive calendar years.
The Broadwater WRF has achieved an impressive milestone of 29 consecutive years of 100% NPDES permit compliance, while the Annapolis WRF celebrates its tenth consecutive award. The Broadneck and Cox Creek facilities mark nine and eight consecutive years, respectively, of flawless performance.
There are only seven WRFs in the country with a longer 100% permit compliance record greater than the Broadwater WRF.
Since 2020, the seven Anne Arundel County WRF’s represent a total of 35 years of 100% permit compliance.
“Flawless plant operations do not happen in isolation. It takes a comprehensive, coordinated effort across every branch of DPW to maintain this level of excellence,” said DPW Director Karen Henry. “What we build together ensures resilience for our entire county.”
To honor the key team members who contributed to earning these awards, Dave Kramer, Utility Administrator for the Wastewater Division, spearheaded the organization, management, and hosting of the recognition event.
