Police Press Release for March 24, 2016
WESTERN DISTRICT
Joint Pursuit with Maryland State Police - Millersville/Glen Burnie
On March 23, 2016 at approximately 12:13 p.m. detectives from our Western District were conducting surveillance on a known suspected drug dealer. The suspect drove away from the area where detectives were conducting their surveillance so detectives followed. In the area of Millersville Road and Waterberry Road in Millersville, detectives observed the suspect exceeding the speed limit and attempted a lawful traffic stop.
The suspect, who was operating a black Chevrolet Cobalt, failed to stop and continued driving towards Interstate 97. Detectives turned off their vehicle’s emergency equipment and followed the vehicle at a safe distance while giving Maryland State Police the description and tag of the vehicle. A State Trooper, who was traveling on Interstate 97 observed the suspect vehicle and also attempted a traffic stop. The suspect again failed to stop, and continued traveling on (NB) Interstate 97 until exiting onto Quarterfield Road. Once on Quarterfield Road, the suspect intentionally struck a second State Trooper who was responding to assist.
The pursuit continued to the area of Oakwood Road and Aquahart Road where County Police Officers had shut down the intersection and deployed a tire deflation device (stop sticks). As the suspect approached the intersection he intentionally struck a County Police vehicle then drove over the tire deflation device making his vehicle inoperable.
The suspect immediately fled on foot, ignoring numerous commands from multiple police officers that were ordering him to surrender. As a County Police Office attempted to arrest the suspect, he assaulted her, actively resisted arrest, and was taken to the ground by the State Trooper. The suspect continued to resist and refused orders to submit attempting to fight officers as the State Trooper continued to try to handcuff the suspect. Several officers arrived and attempted to assist in controlling the fighting suspect. After a short time, the State Trooper was ultimately able to handcuff the suspect.
Inside the suspect vehicle officers recovered approximately 2.24 grams of crack cocaine and $555 in U.S. Currency. No County Police Officers or innocent bystanders were injured during the incident. The state trooper whose vehicle was struck sustained minor injuries. The suspect sustained minor abrasions on his forehead and was treated and released from a local hospital. The actions of the Anne Arundel County Police Officers will be reviewed by command staff per our Departmental Policy.

Fatal Crash - Hanover
On March 23, 2016 at approximately 6:22 pm, officers responded to a single vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on eastbound MD Rt. 100 near Arundel Mills Blvd. Witnesses reported the motorcycle operator began riding a wheelie as he entered eastbound Rt. 100 from Arundel Mills Blvd. The operator began to lose control and attempted to place his foot down on the roadway. This caused the operator to lose all control of the motorcycle causing it to travel to the right where it struck the guardrail. The operator separated from the motorcycle also striking the guardrail.
The motorcycle operator was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he later died from his injuries. The preliminary cause of the crash appears to be speed and reckless/negligent driving on the part of the motorcycle operator. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drug usage contributed in this crash. The motorcycle was reported stolen in Chesterfield County, Virginia on March 20, 2015.
The Traffic Safety Section is handling the ongoing investigation.
