Police Press Release February 17, 2017

Eastern District

Fatal Pedestrian Crash                                                                                 Severna Park

On February 17, 2017 at approximately 12:04 a.m. officers responded for a pedestrian stuck on Ritchie Hwy (MD-2) southbound near McKinsey Road in Severna Park.

A Chevy pickup was traveling south on MD-2 when the pedestrian ran westbound across the roadway just south of McKinsey Road and was struck in the middle lane of three lanes.  The pedestrian, who had run from the gas station on the east corner, had just missed being struck by another car in the northbound lanes.   The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene by the Fire Department personnel and was taken the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy.  The driver of the Chevy received minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene.

The preliminary cause of the crash was failure of the pedestrian to yield right-of-way to vehicular traffic when crossing outside of the crosswalk that was available at McKinsey Road.  Neither excessive speed nor alcohol use was a contributing factor.

The Traffic Safety Section is handing the crash investigation and charges, if any, would be filed after a review by the State’s Attorney.
