Fatal Crash / Severn

On March 30, 2020 at approximately 3:54 p.m., officers responded to Town Center Boulevard and Charter Oaks Boulevard in Severn for a single vehicle crash. A Kia Forte was southbound on Town Center Boulevard approaching Charter Oaks Boulevard. For an unknown reason, the Kia went off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a curb and continued until striking a tree. The driver was pronounced dead on the scene by Anne Arundel County Fire Department personnel and transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for an autopsy. A juvenile passenger was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Preliminarily, the primary cause of the crash appears to be the driver of the Kia failing to remain in a single lane. Speed does not appear to have contributed to this crash. Fatal Crash / Riva

On March 30, 2020, at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers responding to an unrelated call for service came upon a single-vehicle crash on Riva Road near Beards Point Rd in Riva, Maryland. At the scene, a 2001 GMC Yukon was located on its side in the center of the roadway by the officer. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation revealed that the Yukon was traveling northbound on Riva Road north of Beards Point Road when it lost control on a curve. The Yukon then began to rotate counter-clockwise and crossed the center-line where it struck an embankment and tree. The vehicle later overturned onto its driver's side, partially ejecting the driver. The driver of the Yukon was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.

Preliminarily, the primary cause of the crash is driver error for not safely navigating the S-curve. It is believed that alcohol, drugs, and speed are factors in this crash. The Traffic Safety Section is investigating.
