Package Delivery Theft Arrest - Odenton
On December 18, 2015, an employee of the Anne Arundel County Police Department reported that a package that was delivered to the Western District Police Station on December 17, 2015 was stolen from the front lobby. The employee contacted the delivery service who confirmed that the delivery had been made that afternoon; however, the package could not be located.
The building’s surveillance system was reviewed in an attempt to locate the missing package and possibly identify the suspect(s) responsible for stealing the property. Surveillance video captured the delivery driver arrive at Western District and place the package against the lobby door which leads to a secure area for authorized personnel only. The delivery driver then exited the lobby of Western District. Also captured on the surveillance video is a white male wearing a camouflage jacket sitting in the lobby of Western District. The male has been identified as Michael Joseph Leonard, a 53 year old male, who lives in the 1700 block of Gunwood Place in Crofton, Maryland. Mr. Leonard is a registered sex offender who was seated in the lobby of Western District waiting to be processed in order to renew his sex offender registration.
The Western District surveillance system also captured that as the delivery driver exited the building, Mr. Leonard stood up out of his chair, walked toward the door where the package was placed, and removed the package from off the floor before exiting the building with the package in his possession. Mr. Leonard then returned to Western District without the package and was processed as a registered sexual offender.
Members of the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Western District Detective Unit responded to Mr. Leonard’s address and located the stolen package inside of the vehicle and returned all of the missing property to its owner. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for theft and he was arrested on December 21, 2015.
