County Executive Steve Schuh Declares March 30th “Vietnam Veterans Day” in Anne Arundel County

Will Present Official Proclamation at 2nd Annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Event

Annapolis, MD (March 30, 2016) — Recognizing the undeniable contribution that Vietnam War veterans have made to our history, culture, and economy, County Executive today declared March 30th “Vietnam Veterans Day” in Anne Arundel County.

“For far too long, our Vietnam Veterans have been denied the recognition and gratitude they bravely earned on the battlefield,” said Schuh. “Today, our county will finally say thank you to all the brave souls who fought and died for our country.”

The County Executive will officially present the proclamation at the 2nd Annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans reception, sponsored by the Hospice of the Chesapeake.  The free event will be held at the Hilton Baltimore BWI Hotel, 1739 W. Nursery Road in Linthicum.

As they enter the event, each Vietnam Veteran will be pinned with a lapel pin from the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, authorized by Congress to honor Vietnam Veterans and their families for their sacrifice.

The Hospice of the Chesapeake joined the more than 8,000 local, state and federal organizations who have committed to assisting the nation in showing its gratitude to the 7.2 million living Vietnam veterans and the families of all 9 million who served.

The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature speakers who are predominantly Vietnam War Veterans, including retired Brig. Gen. John P. Rose, USA (Ret.), Senior Representative for the USA Vietnam War Commemoration; Maryland Secretary of Veterans Affairs George W. Owings III; Army Veteran Jan Scruggs, founder of the Vietnam War Memorial Fund; and retired Rear Adm. Robert H. Shumaker, USN (Ret.) who is a former Prisoner of War.

In the 2015 Session of the General Assembly, Governor Larry Hogan signed Senate Bill 80 designating March 30th as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day" across Maryland.
