    • The Archaeology of the Patuxent River: Kayaking through History Time: 10:00am - 2:00pm Locations: Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary Details: Join Anne Arundel County archaeologist Drew Webster in a kayaking expedition to learn about the archaeological and cultural history along the Patuxent River from early occupations over 10,000 years ago to historic times. Drew will share how these archaeological sites inform us about past ways of life along the Patuxent River. The Patuxent River is a relatively slow moving river, but paddlers must be able to propel the canoe or kayak through the water. Bring plenty of water, lunch/snack, sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses, and closed toed shoes that can get wet. Ages: 13 and older (under 18 with a parent). $25 per person.     • Ethics Commission Meeting(Cancelled) Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm Locations: 2666 Riva Road Annapolis, MD 21401 Details:

      The Ethics Commission is regularly scheduled to meet on the second Monday of each month, beginning at 4:00 p.m., in the commission’s office, unless rescheduled by the commission.  The commission will also have a contingent meeting scheduled for the third Monday of each month. The open portion of the meeting is usually quite brief, about 5-15 minutes.  Visitors are welcome to attend the open portion of the meeting.  If a person would like to bring a matter to the commission's attention or otherwise be heard during either the open or closed portion of the meeting, that person must notify the commission at least 24 hours prior to the meeting, providing that person's name and contact information. The commission has the discretion to permit a person to address the commission during a meeting, and may limit the time for the remarks of any speaker. The commission will not respond to questions or comments during a meeting, but upon request, will respond in writing to any speaker within a reasonable time after the meeting.

      Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary - Emory Waters Nature Preserve

      Join staff and volunteers on Wednesdays 9 am - 12 noon at the Emory Waters Nature Preserve to work in our pollinator gardens. To beat the heat we will meet 8-11 am June 21-Sept 15. See Jug Bay’s newest property and learn about native perennials that support our native butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Volunteers will weed, mulch, prune, and plant to revive, maintain, and build pollinator gardens. Meet new friends and enjoy interesting conversations. Bring gardening gloves, your favorite tools, and plenty of drinking water. Current health guidelines will be enforced. Ages: 12 and up, minors must be accompanied by an adult. Free. Walk-ins welcome!       Notice Regarding Rabies Clinics

      Rabies clinics at Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control resumed beginning Thursday May 14, 2020. Effective Thursday June 11, 2020 Animal Care & Control will be resuming microchip implantations. The procedures have been modified to comply with social distancing, restrictions on gatherings and to ensure the health well being of citizens and Animal Care & Control team members/contractors as best we can. We have been adjusting the clinic each week to find the most effective and efficient ways of providing the services and we will continue to review in an attempt to improve the process. We continue to ask for your patience as we work out the kinks of this new process.

      Animal Care & Control will be pre-scheduling the services by appointment. Go to https://www.aacounty.org/departments/animal-control/rabies-clinic-scheduling/index.html to request an appointment. We apologize but the number of citizens/animals serviced will be limited however we believe the number of appointments available is commensurate with the current need.

      A few things to note:
      • Clinic attendees MUST BE Anne Arundel County County Residents and are limited to bringing two (2) pets per appointment.
      • Attendees WILL NOT be allowed inside Animal Care & Control as the building is CLOSED to the public
      • Attendees MUST remain in their vehicle unless/until instructed otherwise by our team member
      • Attendees MUST be wearing a mask over their mouth & nose (even when 6 feet or greater from our team members)
      • All dogs MUST BE ON A 6 FOOT LEASH (attendees will be given instructions on how to transfer the animal to our team member while ensuring social distancing)
      • All cats MUST BE IN A CARRIER (attendees will be given instructions on how to transfer the animal to our team member while ensuring social distancing)
      • Attendees MUST remain at least 6 feet from our team members and MAY NOT linger outside their vehicle.
      • Animal Care & Control WILL NOT be offering these services (for the time being) for animals that require a muzzle or “do best” when handled by their owner for safety reasons. Please contact your regular full service veterinarian for assistance.
      • Attendees will be providing ALL necessary information regarding themselves, their animal and identifying information about their vehicle when the appointment is made.
      • Payment will be made OVER THE PHONE and proof of ID must be provided when we call to provide your appointment time. An AACACC team member will call you to obtain payment and provide your appointment time between 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
      • If you are not here on the correct date and at the time of your appointment you will be rescheduled for another date/time
      • License renewals must be mailed in
      • Rabies Vaccination cost is $5.00.
      • Microchip Implantation is $20.00
       

      Low cost rabies vaccinations and microchip implantations are available on specific Thursdays (except holidays) for a period of 3 hours at Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control. Times are dependent on the season and we do have some clinics with special hours.  The veterinarian leaves promptly at the end time for the clinic. Depending on the length of the line, Animal Care & Control may conclude the line at an appropriate time to ensure all individuals remaining in line receive the services.  
        

      Please note clinics are weather permitting and may be canceled for high temperatures, low temperatures, precipitation, air quality or any other factors that may increase risks to citizens or animals at the outdoor clinic. 
        

      Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers.

Join our Field Work Fridays at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary. Every Friday rain or shine, volunteers join staff naturalists to tackle a stewardship project in need of support. Projects include invasive plant removals, trash clean-ups, gardening, citizen science monitoring, and more. Volunteers are welcome to bring a bagged lunch to enjoy after our work is completed. No prior training or experience is necessary to join our Field Work Fridays! Free. Ages 8 and up, minors must be accompanied by a guardian.     • Jean and Edgar Parker Rest Area Dedication Time: 1:00pm - 1:30pm Locations: See Description Details: Please join the Department of Recreation and Parks, the Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails, and Mr. Edgar Parker on Friday, October 15, at 1:00pm, for the dedication of the Jean and Edgar Parker Memorial Rest Area. This new picturesque rest area will mark the western terminus of the Broadneck Trail when completed. Mr. Parker, a Navy veteran and long time Arnold resident, is especially proud of his volunteer efforts. Ed helped lobby for the Broadneck Trail and has served on the Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails for many years, where he received the Trailblazer Award in 2014. After the first section of the Broadneck Trail was completed in 2012, he helped create the Segree Rest Area by Broadneck Library. His wife Jean, also an active volunteer, passed away in 2007.

      Come listen to our very own Kinder Farm Veterinarian Dr. John Stott and Park Ranger Sam Ziff as they lead an in depth tour of the farm, introducing participants to the animals who live there and discussing the veterinary care that's needed to keep them happy and healthy.

      Gather around a campfire at one of your favorite parks this fall for a series of engaging and informative chats. Each week Park Rangers and local experts will lead discussions on a different theme, exploring topics about wildlife, conservation, history, survival skills, folklore and more. Bring a portable camp chair and share s’mores and stories by the fire, or sit back, relax and enjoy the evening. A $5.00 registration fee covers program costs. Prepackaged s’mores supplies will be provided. Guest speakers and topics will be announced via social media.

    • Mysteries of the Marsh - Fall Foliage Canoe Time: 2:00pm - 6:00pm Locations: Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary Details: The marsh is getting ready to go dormant for the year, but is not finished yet! We’ll look for late season flowers, migratory birds, beaver, otter, and other wildlife. Children must be at least 7 years old, and under 13 must be accompanied by two paddling adults. The child will sit in the middle of the canoe with adults paddling. Trips are 4 hours long and include: general orientation, basic paddling lesson, up to 0.5 mile walk to canoes/kayaks, launching canoes, and paddling. Paddlers can expect to actively paddle for 2 to 2.5 hours. The Patuxent River is a relatively slow-moving river, but paddlers must be able to propel the canoe or kayak through the water.
