Commissioner Skills

Commissioners should have the capacity, interest, availability, and commitment required to perform the functions authorized by the code, including: 
 

  1. initiate, receive, mediate, and/or adjudicate complaints of discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations (this includes presiding over hearings) 
  2. mediate community conflicts conduct public hearings 
  3. provide training, seminars, and educational programs 
  4. collect, research, assemble, analyze, and disseminate data and educational materials 
  5. make recommendations to the County Executive, the County Council, and County departments and offices 
  6. collaborate with federal, State, and local commissions, agencies, organizations, and groups. 
     

Time Commitment

(~40 hours per year/ 3.5 hours per month) 

Commissioners should expect to attend ten Commission meetings per year (2 hours/meeting). In addition, service may require:

  • Participation in Commission-sponsored events (4 hours semi-annually)
  • Participation in County, community, or stakeholder events (2 hours per quarter) 
  • Participation in Commissioner training or capacity-building activities (4 hours per year)
