Commissioner Skills
Commissioners should have the capacity, interest, availability, and commitment required to perform the functions authorized by the code, including:
- initiate, receive, mediate, and/or adjudicate complaints of discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations (this includes presiding over hearings)
- mediate community conflicts conduct public hearings
- provide training, seminars, and educational programs
- collect, research, assemble, analyze, and disseminate data and educational materials
- make recommendations to the County Executive, the County Council, and County departments and offices
- collaborate with federal, State, and local commissions, agencies, organizations, and groups.
Time Commitment
(~40 hours per year/ 3.5 hours per month)
Commissioners should expect to attend ten Commission meetings per year (2 hours/meeting). In addition, service may require:
- Participation in Commission-sponsored events (4 hours semi-annually)
- Participation in County, community, or stakeholder events (2 hours per quarter)
- Participation in Commissioner training or capacity-building activities (4 hours per year)
