The Anne Arundel County Literacy Council (AACLC) envisions a community where people have achieved their educational goals and are living to their most fulfilling potential.
The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that teaches adults and out-of-school youth at low-literacy and pre-GED levels the reading, math, and English language skills needed to build self-esteem and independence, strengthen family literacy, and support active, contributing community membership.
AACLC provides free one-on-one assessments, tutoring, and materials to county adults. Powered by trained volunteers, the organization offers literacy, math, high school diploma preparation, workplace, and English instruction. Students and tutors meet weekly for individualized lessons at local libraries.
AACLC volunteers also tutor at Jennifer Road Detention Center and Ordnance Road Correctional Center. The Literacy Council partners with local nonprofits and agencies to serve a diverse community of adult learners and has been helping adults with literacy in Anne Arundel County since 1977. There are more than 250 active volunteers in its membership, and they collectively donate more than 18,000 hours of their time in our communities every year.
