    • Coffee with a Ranger Time: 9:00am - 10:00am Locations: Fort Smallwood Park Details: Come join a ranger at the Cedar Pavilion of Fort Smallwood Park on Wednesday's from 9-10 AM for a free cup of coffee, tea, or hot cocoa! Ask questions about the park, local flora and fauna, or simply get to know the rangers a little bit better while you enjoy a warm beverage. This is a FREE program, excluding the $6 park entrance fee. All ages welcome, no registration required.

      Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary - Emory Waters Nature Preserve

      Join staff and volunteers on Wednesdays 9 am - 12 noon at the Emory Waters Nature Preserve to work in our pollinator gardens. To beat the heat we will meet 8-11 am June 21-Sept 15. See Jug Bay’s newest property and learn about native perennials that support our native butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Volunteers will weed, mulch, prune, and plant to revive, maintain, and build pollinator gardens. Meet new friends and enjoy interesting conversations. Bring gardening gloves, your favorite tools, and plenty of drinking water. Current health guidelines will be enforced. Ages: 12 and up, minors must be accompanied by an adult. Free. Walk-ins welcome! Groups of five or more please call Debra at 410-222- 8006 to arrange. Proceed through the driveway gate about 1 mile to the second white house.

    • Waterbird Survey Time: 7:30am - 9:30am Locations: Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary Details: Join a periodic survey of waterbirds on freshwater, tidal, marshes at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary. The ornithological knowledge and collaborative attitude of our volunteer team creates a phenomenal learning experience. All of this in the beautiful early morning light of the Jug Bay Wetlands, on the Patuxent River. Ages: 12 and older. Free (entrance fee waived). Current health guidelines will be required. Join our Field Work Fridays at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary. Every Friday rain or shine, volunteers join staff naturalists to tackle a stewardship project in need of support. Projects include invasive plant removals, trash clean-ups, gardening, citizen science monitoring, and more. Volunteers are welcome to bring a bagged lunch to enjoy after our work is completed. No prior training or experience is necessary to join our Field Work Fridays! Free. Ages 8 and up, minors must be accompanied by a guardian.     • Bird Walk Time: 7:00am - 9:00am Locations: Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary Details: Join an avid Jug Bay birder to learn skills for identifying birds by sight and sound. Novice and experienced birders are welcome on this 2-3 mile walk to explore the forests and wetlands in search of the 250+ species of birds that call Jug Bay home, or migrate through. Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring a spotting scope and binoculars if you have them. Ages 12 and older. Free with $6 per vehicle park entrance fee. Gate opens at 6:45 am for a 7 am prompt start time. Current health guidelines and registration required. Space is limited.     • Infant and Toddler Sensory Nature Hike Time: 9:30am - 11:00am Locations: South River Farm Park Details:

      This hike is designed with little ones in mind. Research has shown that kids who play outside are calmer, happier, and more imaginative. What better time to introduce them to nature than in these young formative years. Please be prepared to let your little ones get wet and dirty. The Blacksmith Shop is open on Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Monday nights from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

      Drop-off begins at 9:00 a.m., children must be picked up by 3:00 p.m. Activities include games, swimming, pizza, and movies. Children should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. Bring a swimsuit and towel. Masks are required. $22.00 early registration fee by the Friday before, $34.00 registration fee on Saturday of the event.     • LPPRP Presentation Town Hall #1 Time: 6:30pm - 8:00pm Locations: Zoom Meeting - see details below Details:

      The Department of Recreation and Parks will host two virtual Town Hall meetings to present the draft 2022 Land Preservation, Parks and Recreation Plan (LPPRP) and receive citizen comments.  The Plan evaluates the demand for parklands and recreational facilities based on need, proximity, and equity and outlines goals and priorities for the next five, ten, and fifteen years. 

      The meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, February 15, and Thursday, February 24, both at 6:30 pm.  Please register to join us via Zoom using links below. Residents in attendance will be given two minutes each to share public testimony about the draft LPPRP and the future of our parks and recreation system. The draft Plan and a link to share your written comments may be found on the Parks and Rec website at https://www.aacounty.org/departments/recreation-parks/about-us/lpprp/index.html.

See how many resident and migrant birds you can spot! Participants should bring good walking shoes and binoculars (not required, but helpful!) Park admission fee is waived for participants.     • Pysanky: Ukrainian Egg Decorating Time: 1:00pm - 4:00pm Locations: Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary Details: Create a beautiful egg in the time-honored Ukrainian tradition of Pysanky, or create a symbolic piece of art to invoke a new world vision. This workshop will explore the art in a free form, using symbolism that tells a specific story and holds a deliberate intention. Each participant will receive a Pysanky kit containing the basic tools and materials required for the class. Instructor Coreen Weilminster has been making Pysanky for over 20 years. Participants must bring an empty egg carton to transport their piece home safely and a bag lunch/ snack. Pre-registration and payment is required by February 10th to purchase kits. No refunds after February 10th. Ages: 12 and up. Maximum of 15 participants. Fee: $35/person, includes materials and Pysanky kit to keep.     • Magnificent Marsh Mammals Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm Locations: Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary Details: What mammals inhabit our lovely marshes at Jug Bay? Find out, and perhaps see some in person on an evening hike through the woods and along the edge of the marsh. Join Chuck Hatcher, Jug Bay’s resident expert on otters, for a 1-3 mile walk. Look and listen for signs of activity while Chuck shares interesting facts about these magnificent marsh mammals. Bring a flashlight. All ages. Free with $6 per vehicle park entrance fee.
