Litter/Debris Removal

Removal and disposing of litter along County-maintained roadways is normally done by hand.  This activity, which includes the removal of small items from the road right-of-way, can be costly.  It is a necessary activity. However, the time dedicated to these efforts diverts from other maintenance work that also helps to preserve the investment taxpayers have made in our infrastructure.
 
With the expense of this needed activity and the amount of man hours incurred in mind, we ask that you

Help us educate your neighbors about the affects and costs of litter and debris removal. We can all minimize litter's in our County by not littering.  Always carry a trash bag in your car.  Never throw cigarette butts out of your car window.  By working together, we will all enjoy a cleaner and more pleasant environment at a reduced cost.  In addition, litter free communities preserve property values.
 
Removal and disposing of debris (larger items) along County-maintained roadways is normally done by machine.  On average, Anne Arundel County spends over $300,000 per year removing debris from roadsides. Debris removal from storm damage is handled in a variety of ways, depending on whether the debris is within the County-maintained road right-of-way or whether the debris is on privately owned property. Please visit our Storm Debris webpage for complete information regarding this service.
 
Litter removal activities follow a programmed frequency throughout the year. Debris removal is scheduled as needed. Both activities are subject to resource availability. In order to meet the demand for this service, we sometimes use contractor or prison labor. Hazardous situations should be reported immediately.
 
To request litter/debris removal, please contact the appropriate road districtRoad districts are open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. A supervisor will investigate your concern and respond to you within one week (one day if it is a hazard) to advise you of a schedule for any needed work.
