Census 2020 - Everyone Counts!

County Executive Pittman Launches "Everyone Counts" Effort for 2020 Census

Why the Census?

  • It's Important
  • It's Easy
  • It's Safe
  • It's Right Around the Corner - September 30, 2020

The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a count of every person living in the United States every ten years as required by the U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 2.  The data collected by the census determines the number of seats Maryland has in the U.S. House of Representatives.  In other words, Maryland currently has 8 Congressional representatives, but if the census determines our population has increased, it could mean Maryland would need to add a ninth representative.

Census data is also used to determine how more than $675 billion in federal funds are distributed back to states and local communities every year for services and infrastructure, including health care, jobs, schools, roads and businesses through programs like Medicaid, SNAP, Head Start and Highway Planning and Construction.

When people aren't counted, that translates to $1821 per person.  In the 2010 census, Anne Arundel had a 20% non-response rate.  This means there was a total of $43 million of monies lost to this community because people went uncounted.

The information collected from the census is used for everything from how we determine the number of congressional seats to how we allocate billions of dollars in federal resources, particularly important for minority and immigrant communities.

Finally, the law requires the Census Bureau to keep all information confidential and use it only to produce statistics.

In order for each community to obtain the resources it needs, every count matters. It is in your hands to be counted.

We need all those who live and work in our community to participate in the 2020 Census.
