District 1 Seat on the Board of Education
OverviewIn 2017, the Maryland General Assembly passed a law that required the Anne Arundel County Board of Education to include, among other things, 7 elected members, one for each Councilmanic district in the County. See 2017 Maryland Laws Ch. 473 (H.B. 716). Members representing Districts 1, 4, 5, and 7 were elected to the County Board of Education during the general election held on November 6, 2018, for six-year terms that began on December 3, 2018. Members representing Districts 2, 3, and 6 were elected during the general election held on November 3, 2020, for four-year terms that began on December 7, 2020. A member from each district will be elected at the general election in 2024 for four-year terms that will begin on December 2, 2024. Under State law, the County Council “shall select a qualified individual to fill any vacancy in the office of an elected member of the county board for the remainder of the term and until a successor is elected and qualifies”. Md. Code Ann., Educ. § 3-2A-04. The District 1 seat was left vacant in July of 2021 and the County Council must select a qualified individual to fill this vacancy. |
Application
The Anne Arundel County Council is accepting applications from individuals interested in serving as the District 1 representative on the Board of Education for Anne Arundel County for the remainder of a term that ends on December 1, 2024 and until a successor is elected and qualifies. If selected by the County Council to fill the District 1 seat, the individual will need to be a current resident of District 1 and may not be employed by or subject to the authority of the County Board of Education.
A completed application, a current resume, and any additional sheets, must be received in the Office of the County Council by 4:00 p.m. on September 1, 2021. Applications submitted by qualified individuals will be posted to this site after the application period closes.
