Severe Weather Animal Alert Information

In accordance with Anne Arundel County law, when the Anne Arundel County Executive declares a severe weather emergency (when temperatures are expected to be below 32 degrees), any dog left unattended outside must have the items listed below:

• Fresh, clean and drinkable non-frozen water at all times in a non-tip bowl.
• Dry bedding or resting board inside the dog house.
• If the dog is in an enclosure, the minimum enclosure size must meet County minimums
  • Minimum Enclosure sizes: 100 square feet dogs under 80 pounds, 150 square feet for dogs over 80 pounds, additional 50 square feet for each dog under 80 pounds in the same enclosure, additional 75 square feet for each dog over 80 pounds in the same enclosure.
• A dog house, with no interior metal surfaces, that protects the animal against wind, snow and cold. That is raised at least 2 inches off the ground. 
   
• From December 1 - March 15 the dog house must have an accessible covered entry or an off-set door to act as a windbreak.
   
• Dogs CANNOT:
  • Be tethered unless temperatures are above 33 degrees and the dog is supervised at all times.

Failure to comply with the above requirements may result in civil citations with fines from $500 - $1,000 in violation of the County Code, removal of the animal and/or criminal prosecution for abuse or neglect of an animal in violation of State Law.

Animal Care & Control also recommends:

• The entrances of dog house be oriented away from prevailing winds.
   
• Abundant dry bedding inside the dog house.
   
• A heated or insulated water bowl (please read/follow instructions carefully to avoid fires)
   
• If the temperature or wind chills are expected to be at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, all dogs should be brought indoors to an area that will not reach below 33 degrees Fahrenheit.
