    • AARP Tax Aide Appointments Time: All Day Locations: South County Senior Activity Center 27 Stepneys Lane Edgewater, MD 21037 Details: AARP Tax-Aide assists people with preparing and filing both Federal and State taxes. Volunteer tax preparers are certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and they help only with simple tax returns, which will be filed electronically. Please call for an appointment. Make sure that you bring all of your tax information and last year’s return to your appointment

The presentation runs about 45 minutes and topics (focused on older adults) include:  Maryland Summer severe weather hazards (including hurricanes) and preparedness tips  The 2020 Hurricane Season outlook  How to prepare for any storm (make a plan, stay informed, build a kit, get involved)  Power outages  What to do after the storm

    • AARP Tax Aide Program Time: All Day Locations: Pasadena Senior Activity Center 4103 Mountain Road Pasadena, MD 21122 Details: For individuals who have registered for the AARP Tax-Aide program at the Pasadena Senior Activity Center, appointments will begin today. Please be sure to check your registration packets for the date and time of your appointment. Please note that snow make-up days will be held April 6th through April 15th. This program assists people with preparing and filing both Federal and State, as well as, helping individuals to claim Homeowners or Renters Tax Credit. Volunteers are certified by the Internal Revenue Service and will help only with simple tax returns which are filed electronically. Volunteers do not do tax returns involving partnerships, corporations, some selfemployed persons or rental properties. Appointments fill up quickly so call or stop at the front desk for more information.

This free 45 minute presentation will include: Description of the winter weather Anne Arundel County may experience; Discussion of National Weather Service weather categories and alerting; How to prepare yourself and your family for any emergency; Pet preparedness; How to prepare your home and car for winter weather; Handling power outages, and What to do after the storm. Whether you're a complete beginner or need a refresher, these classes will teach the basics to get you started on your sewing journey. Veteran sewing instructor, Pauline Senk, will help you learn the basics of sewing beginning with becoming familiar with the sewing machine. This will include how to thread, how to wind a bobbin and how to change a needle. You’ll also learn how to use the various stitches on the machine, about the different types of fabrics and the sewing machine adjustments for them, and learn how to create a project by using a pattern.     • Happy Hats Wig Workshop Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm Locations: South County Senior Activity Center 27 Stepneys Lane Edgewater, MD 21037 Details: Happy Hats Maryland is a charity project that provides yarn wigs and character hats to pediatric oncology patients. Kay Alston from Happy Hats will lead this workshop to assemble the wigs from other materials that are made ahead of time. All materials and supplies will be provided. No skills are required. At the end of the workshop, participants will have learned some new crafting skills and had some fun with friends, and Happy Hats will have a few wigs to donate to pediatric patients in the area. All of the hats that are made are for donation, not to be taken home. Sign up at the front desk.

    • Thinking Inside the Box: Research & Confessions of a Chocoholic Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm Locations: Arnold Senior Activity Center 44 Church Road Arnold, MD 21012 Details: Does chocolate really have health benefits or is it all just wishful thinking? Take a look at the chemistry of chocolate and a summary of the research on health effects of chocolate consumption. You will also learn about varieties of cacao and the steps involved in the processing of chocolate. You are invited to take part in a chocolate taste receptor sensitivity survey, and through it all, you will gain some insight into the mind of a chocoholic! Presented by Carol Veil, Professor Emeritus, Biology, Anne Arundel Community College. Afterwards, enjoy a diverse selection of chocolate treats!

    • MD Court System: Overview Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm Locations: Catherine L. O'Malley Senior Center 1275 Odenton Road Odenton, MD 21113 (410) 222-6227 Details: Learn about the MD Court System. The discussion will include: an overview of the different levels of courts and the types of cases each one handles; what judges do and how they are selected; and what the clerk’s office is and what it does. Also discussed will be various resources the judiciary makes available to the public to help with many types of common causes, such as landlord/tenant issues, guardianship, small claims, and many others. Presented by Scott Poyer, Clerk of the Circuit Court.
       
       
    • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Screening Time: 10:00am - 11:30am Locations: Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center 202 Hammonds Lane Brooklyn Park, MD 21225 Details: PAD is a condition in which the arteries supplying blood to the legs become narrow or clogged with plaque, constricting the flow of blood. This can lead to cramping, pain in the feet and legs, cold feet, discolored skin, and if left untreated, ulcerations, gangrene, and amputation. People with diabetes and a history of smoking are most at risk of developing peripheral artery disease. Staff from Podiatry Associates will visit the center to give a brief presentation about the disease and hold screenings afterwards. Held on Tuesday, February 11th from 10:00- 11:30. Screenings are free, non-invasive and take about 3-5 minutes. Please wear shoes and socks that can easily be taken off. Sign up is not required.

Like to learn more? Then please welcome Scott Poyer, Clerk of the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County, as he raises our awareness of our court system and how it works. He will discuss an overview of the Judiciary, the role of the Clerk’s Office, recent trends, and of course answer questions. Time permitting, one or more of our Circuit Court Judges will also be present to talk about their experience of being a judge. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind presentation!

    • Registration for Spring Classes Time: All Day Locations: All Senior Centers Details: Registration for the Spring Cycle of Anne Arundel Community College’s Senior Program non-credit classes begins on Thursday, February 13th. Most classes will start the week of April 6th. A wide variety of fitness, art, computer, and other enrichment courses will be offered. Check on-line or in the office for a complete listing. All classes require a $80 administrative fee payable to AACC by check or major credit card. Those under age 60 pay an additional $40 per course. Some classes may have a supply fee. Please be sure to register early to avoid class cancellations or classes filling up. The most expedient way to register is online at myaacc.aacc.edu. The last day to register at the Center is March 24th.

You will learn defensive driving techniques, proven safety strategies and new laws and rules of the road. There are no tests to pass, you simply sign up and learn.     • State of Maryland Judiciary System Seminar Time: 1:00pm - 2:00pm Locations: Pascal Senior Activity Center 125 Dorsey Road Glen Burnie, MD 21061 Details: Learn about the Maryland Court System. The discussion will include: an overview of the different levels of courts and the types of cases each one handles; what judges do and how they are selected; and what the clerk’s office is and what it does. Also discussed will be various resources the judiciary makes available to the public to help with many types of common cases, such as landlord/tenant issues, guardianship, small claims, and many others. Presented by Scott Poyer, Clerk of the Circuit Court and a Circuit Court Judge . They will be happy to entertain questions about the judiciary process as well. This workshop teaches participants the selfmanagement skills of action planning, problem solving and decision making. In addition, participants will learn about healthy eating, suggested modes of exercise, and how to manage stress levels. This workshop will meet from February 25– March 31, from 9:30- 12:00.
