Youth Advisory Council members typically serve for a duration of one year with the potential to apply for a second term, and hours can be counted towards a member’s service learning requirements.

Expectation of Members
As a member of the Youth Advisory Council, you will be expected to:
- Attend monthly scheduled meetings
- Be an active and passionate representative of Anne Arundel County
- Identify and discuss issues youth are facing in the county
- Work to create strategies that address these issues
- Be motivated to develop leadership, advocacy, and team-building skills
- Show kindness, dignity, and respect to other members, staff, and members of the public
Meeting Schedule
Meetings are typically held on the 3rd Thursday of every month from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Some meetings are held in person, some are virtual, and some are hybrid. Please check the calendar dates below a week prior to the meeting for location information, or email youthadvisorycouncil@aacounty.org for information.
Upcoming Meetings
What Your Council Has Been Doing
The Youth Advisory Council has been very active in its first few years. Below is a list of items that they have worked on:
- Submitted testimony on draft federal legislation in support of creating a Chesapeake National Recreation Area.
- Wrote a letter to County Executive Pittman asking him to fund the Board of Education’s annual budget request.
- Gave testimony at a County Council Budget Hearing in support of creating a permanent funding source for the affordable housing trust fund.
- Drafted and passed County Council legislation to codify the Youth Advisory Council.
- Hosted a Financial Literacy Academy.
- Submitted testimony on the Climate Solutions Act (SB 414), Student-Organized Peaceful Demonstrations (HB 753), and Mental Health Excused Absences (HB 461) to the Maryland General Assembly.
- Delivered written and verbal testimony in support of County Council Bill 98-21 to secure the voting rights of the youth member appointed to the Human Relations Commission.
- Provided testimony in support of County Council Bill 108-21, a public safety bill that required firearm safety, training, suicide prevention, and mental health literature be distributed by gun retailers at the point of sale.
- Participated in the Youth COVID-19 Awareness Campaign, “I mask up for…” in partnership with the Department of Health’s Office of Health Equity and Racial Justice.
- Created a promotional video for the Youth Corps’ spring 2021 event at Quiet Waters Park.
- Researched single-use plastic bags and single use plastic cutlery best practices.
- Sent feedback to the Department of Recreation and Parks on the Land Preservation Parks and Recreation Plan (LPPRP), which lays out future planning for county parks and natural spaces.
