Severn Man Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Striking Three Pedestrians, Ramming SUV in Drunk Driving Rage Outside Cancun Cantina

Annapolis, Maryland – A Severn man was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison for striking three pedestrians with his vehicle and repeatedly ramming a parked SUV with two women inside after an altercation outside the Cancun Cantina last summer, State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess announced.

In total, Adam Rey Wolford, 34, was sentenced to 75 years, with all but 15 suspended. He was also ordered five years of supervised probation upon release.

“A bruised ego and intoxication led the defendant to use his vehicle as a weapon to target innocent victims whose lives were forever changed while simply trying to enjoy a summer evening with friends,” Leitess said. “The victims survived this attack, but continue to recover mentally and physically, with future surgeries in store. This was more than a drunk driving case, and the sentence ensures that he is held accountable.”

On June 4, 2023, just before 2 a.m., Anne Arundel County police responded to the intersection of Dorsey Road and Old Telegraph Road for a hit-and-run involving multiple pedestrians.

At the scene, they found a man laying facedown on Dorsey Road near the entrance of the 7-Eleven store and two additional victims laying in the parking lot with multiple injuries. All three were taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment.

Witnesses said Wolford got into his Jeep Cherokee and began driving erratically around the parking lot before turning the vehicle toward a group standing outside. Clubgoers fled on foot for safety, with some retreating to their vehicles. Two women escaped into a SUV before Wolford began ramming the vehicle with his Jeep. After ramming the SUV, Wolford entered the parking lot of the 7-Eleven store across the street and proceeded to strike three pedestrians, sending some into the air. He returned and struck the SUV again before fleeing the scene.

Officers located the Jeep about a mile from the scene, with Wolford laying on the grass across the road. Police noted multiple signs of impairment, including slurred speech and the odor of alcohol.

On February 1, 2018, Wolford entered a guilty plea to five counts of First-Degree Assault, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, and Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Carolynn Grammas, with the Honorable Stacy McCormack presiding.
