substations located in Galesville, Eastport, and Pasadena, the officers worked 12-hour shifts, six days a week. Equipped with only four patrol cars to cover 416 square miles, they served an estimated population of more than 64,000 people. During the half-century that followed World War II, our county rapidly grew in population. New communities were built, businesses became established, and soon people from all over were settling in Anne Arundel County. As the county population increased, so did the need for police services.Today, we have more than a half-million people living in our county. Between 1990 and 2000, the population grew by more than 62,000 people. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Anne Arundel County is ranked 114 out of 3,141 counties in the United States, placing us among the most populated jurisdictions in the nation. Our police department continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of our communities and our citizens, in order to provide a safe and secure environment to live and work. Today, the Anne Arundel County Police Department has more than a 1,000 sworn and civilian members, including the Chaplains, Reserve Officers, and Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS). Our police department continues to be community-oriented, encouraging citizen involvement in preventing and reducing crime. As part of our on-going effort to increase community awareness, we have created this website to provide enhanced access to our agency.
