Fatal Light Rail Crash                                                                                  Glen Burnie

On October 13th, 2017 at 10:31 am officers responded to a report of a car struck by a light rail train on Baltimore Annapolis Blvd (MD-648) & S. Broadview Blvd in Glen Burnie.

Initial investigation found that the car was northbound on B&A Blvd when it attempted to turn left across the tracks onto S. Broadview Blvd and was struck by a northbound train.  The driver was making the turn against signs that indicated “Do Not Enter” and “No Left Turn”.  At the time of the crash, witnesses also indicated that the rail crossing lights were activated and the stop arm was down on the far side of the tracks facing the one-way traffic on S. Broadview Blvd.  There was no stop arm on the B&A Blvd side since there should be no traffic from that side.

The driver of the car was transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center in critical condition where she later died.  The passenger, her grandson, was taken to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center with minor injuries.

The primary cause of this collision is the driver of the car failing to obey the traffic control devices (Do Not Enter, No Left Turn). Drugs or alcohol were not believed to be contributing factors.

The Traffic Safety Section is handing the investigation and was assisted by the Maryland Transit Administration Police.
