Below are some of the requirements that must be satisfactorily met in order to be eligible for hire as a Lateral Deputy Sheriff. This is not an all inclusive list. The state governing body of police certification (Maryland Police Correctional and Training Commissions) will review each applicant's qualifications on a case-by-case basis to determine if they are eligible for state certification. Previously Certified in the State of Maryland - If you are currently certified in the State of Maryland (currently employed by a law enforcement agency as a sworn police officer), you are eligible for lateral employment status.
- If you were certified in the State of Maryland within the last three years as a sworn police officer and you separated employment while in good standing, you are eligible for lateral employment status.
- If you were certified in the State of Maryland within 3.1 and 5 years as a sworn police officer and you separated employment in good standing, you are eligible for re-certification. Once you successfully complete a five-week "Comparative Compliance" course and are brought to "re-certification" status; you are then eligible for lateral employment status.
- If you were certified as a sworn police officer over 5 years ago, you no longer qualify as a lateral hire. These applicants would apply as entry level and would require an entry level police academy.
- If you are currently certified in the State of Maryland (currently employed by a law enforcement agency as a sworn police officer), you are eligible for lateral employment status.
Previously Certified in another State - If you were previously certified in another state you must provide the following documentation at the time of application:
- Certificate of completion from a state accredited police academy
- Detailed course syllabus of your entry level training with an hourly breakdown of course content. (Note: in-service training courses or any supplemental training hours need not be submitted)
Once received, the documentation will be submitted to the MPCTC for review and approval. This is done on a case-by-case basis and the applicant is responsible for supplying the documentation.
- If approved for initial certification with the MPCTC the applicant would still be required to complete a five week "Comparative Compliance" course which includes law updates indigenous to the State of Maryland.
Certified or Previously Certified with a Federal Law Enforcement Agency: - In most circumstances applicants that attended a federal law enforcement academy that was less than 5-6 months in duration are not eligible. For example, an 8-10 week basic academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) would fall short of state minimums and the applicant would not be considered for lateral hire status.
- If the applicant has completed an extended comprehensive academy at FLETC (i.e. United States Secret Service, US Customs, US Capitol Police) they may be eligible for lateral hire status.
- The applicant is responsible for submitting proof of attendance in the form of a certificate of successful completion and a detailed course syllabus of the academy course curriculum. This will be submitted to the MPCTC for approval for initial certification. If approved, the applicant would be required to complete a five week "Comparative Compliance" course to qualify for initial certification.
You are NOT eligible for lateral hire status if: - You are a Correctional Officer who has not completed a full Police Academy. (Correctional Academy Training is not sufficient).
- You hold a "Special Police" commission.
- You hold a "Private Investigators" license
- You were a Military Police Officer
- You were or are a Reserve Officer or Reserve Sheriff's Deputy
