Threats

The Severn River has been listed by the Maryland Department of the Environment as an impaired waterway, failing to maintain water quality adequate to sustain its designated uses. The Severn was listed based on evidence of excess nutrients, high levels of suspended sediment, and the presence of fecal coliform bacteria, indicating probable sewage contamination. The details of the criteria behind this listing and their implications are discussed elsewhere. In this section we describe environmental threats implicated by studies of life in the Severn.
