Volunteer Mission

Mission: The volunteer and community outreach programs foster opportunities for volunteers to exercise their passion for public service while providing support to the overall mission of the Anne Arundel County’s Department of Recreation and Parks.

Vision: The vision for the future of the volunteer and community outreach programs is to have facility user groups, public and private schools, for-profit and non-profit agencies, and individual volunteers support recreation programs and parks through continual and sustainable volunteer project planning.  With all these community members’ support, the youth in Anne Arundel County will continue to value the parks, trails, and sports fields in which they recreate.  Businesses, schools and agencies are incorporating volunteerism and community outreach as best practices, and because of this the residents of Anne Arundel County benefit.

Purpose Statement:  The Department of Recreation and Parks works in partnership with agencies, organizations, and schools to create unique, meaningful and sustainable community outreach and volunteer projects.  These projects strengthen neighborhoods and help foster a sense of community throughout Anne Arundel County.  Offering opportunities for youth to participate in hands on volunteering and community outreach in the areas they spend their time recreating creates a stewardship mindset for years to come.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

  • Project Green: 9/11 Day of Service & Remembrance – Sat. Sept. 12, 2015 8:00 am to noon

To commemorate Marylanders who have lost their lives in service to their country, including on 9/11, the day will begin at 8:30 am with a brief ceremony at the Maryland World War II Memorial located in the median at 1919-1920 Ritchie Highway (Rt 450), Annapolis, MD 21409. Volunteer Registration begins at 8:00 am.

From 9:00 am until noon, volunteers will participate in environmental service projects beginning at the WW II Memorial and continuing to Jonas Green Park at the foot of the Naval Academy Bridge. This is a “rain or shine event” and will only be delayed or cancelled if there are local thunder storms.

In addition to weeding, planting and mulching to control stormwater runoff, we will participate in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) as volunteers record items of debris they find, giving us a clearer picture of the items impacting the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

Volunteers will sign-in at 8am at the Maryland World War II Memorial. Opportunities for community service credits are available. Students under the age of 18 must have written parental permission. Those under 16 must not only have written parental permission, but an adult on site as well. Wear sturdy shoes or boots (no flip flops), bring a hat, gardening equipment (if you have tools), sunscreen, sunglasses and gloves. Water, snacks and some tools will be provided. Parking is strongly recommended at the WWII Memorial on RT 450.

Pre-registration is required and details will be found at . For more information please contact Fay Mauro, 410-897-9207 or
