Seeking Comments on Proposed Living Shoreline Restoration Project

Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation co-sponsored a public forum to solicit public input concerning a proposed living shoreline restoration project at Galesville Park, located on the West River in Galesville.

The proposal for Galesville Park is to design, install, and monitor a living shoreline restoration project at the 0.797-acre site. The proposed project runs along 180’ of shoreline and involves the placement of stone sill and sand containment structures. Sand will be placed landward of these structures where marsh grasses will be planted. A living shoreline is a shoreline stabilization project that controls erosion by planting native wetland plants while enhancing the natural shoreline habitat.

This proposed project will serve as a model to demonstrate ecologically sound practices as a nonstructural alternative to bulkheads and stone revetments installed throughout the West and Rhode River. As part of the proposal, the project will include a stabilized canoe / kayak launch ramp.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) environmental organization that works cooperatively with government, business, and citizens in partnerships to protect and restore the Bay. The Foundation will provide the funding, design expertise, volunteer labor, and native plants for the project. Anne Arundel County will apply for a tidal wetland permit from the Maryland Department of the Environment for the installation of the proposed project.

The community’s comments regarding the proposed living shoreline project are encouraged.
