During the period 1913 to 1937 this property was the summer estate of H.R. Mayo Thom. In Mother’s Garden was this thatched roof gazebo. The gazebo was built by Reginald Giddings, a handyman who worked for the Thoms. Mr. Giddings was an Englishman who had learned the thatching trade from his father in England. There were apparently other thatched roofed structures on the property including a thatched roofed ‘toolhouse’ on their dock on Locust Cove. Mr. Giddings later went on to Gibson Island were he was involved with the building of the golf course there. He eventually became the greenskeeper there. There are photos on file of a thatched roof pavilion which he built on the golf course at Gibson Island. |
