Kickoff Celebration Set for Twin Oaks
Annapolis, MD (June 8, 2012)— County Executive John R. Leopold announced today that special commemorative flags will be hoisted at government buildings and a kickoff event featuring the late “Charles Linthicum” will be held to remember the War of 1812.
“Our region and our State played a critical role in the war and the adoption of the Star Spangled Banner as our national anthem,” County Executive Leopold said. “We are pleased to join the celebration of this pivotal point in history.”
On June 14th, the celebration will begin with raising the commemorative flag with 15 stars and 15 stars at the Arundel Center at 8:30 a.m. The flag will also fly at the Heritage Office Complex in Riva, Police Headquarters in Millersville and the Circuit Courthouse on Church Circle in Annapolis.
Then from 10:30 a.m. to noon Twin Oaks will be the site of a special appearance by “Congressman Linthicum” and complimentary music provided by Members of the Annapolis Chorale led by Music Director J. Ernest Green. Twin Oaks manor was the summer home of Congressman John Charles Linthicum, who authored the legislation to make the Star-Spangled Banner our National anthem.
The Anne Arundel County War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission has partnered with Anne Arundel County Economic Development Corporation to develop the “War of 1812 Historical Map: In The Eye of The Storm” and will be the County’s first map to feature War of 1812 historical sites, water and nature trails.
County parks will also be great sites to watch the tall ships sail into the Inner Harbor. On Wednesday, June 13th, Fort Smallwood Park will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. so the public can view the ships coming in. Downs Park will be open on Tuesday, June 19th, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for one last chance to watch the ships as they leave.
