Your concerns and comments were polite and well articulated.
The reason the skate park closed was solely because of the graffiti. Many of you stated, “Graffiti is part of the skateboard culture”. However, we do not allow graffiti on county property. It is my responsibility as Director of Recreation and Parks to respectfully consider and acknowledge the concerns of all citizens using our parks and facilities. There are many users of the park that do not like and/or are offended by the graffiti and defacing of park property. At times the graffiti has included foul language and gang symbols. It is an Anne Arundel County Department of Recreations & Parks policy that all disrespectful graffiti/language/symbols is removed within 48 hours of discovery. Frankly, we do not have the staff to continually monitor and clean up the skate park, so we closed the park.
I have listened to your requests and the Department of Recreations & Parks has made the decision to reopen the skate park on Monday, May 16th. I listened and responded to your requests, so I am going to ask the same in return. All users of Sawmill Creek Park must respect and adhere to the rules and regulations. That means that NO graffiti is permitted at the park. If this continues to be an ongoing community and maintenance issue I will have no reservation about closing the skate park again.
