Work-related travel is via County vehicle. - Possession of basic skills such as fertilizing, planting, transplanting, irrigation, mowing and trimming, pruning, greenhouse and nursery maintenance;
- Environmentally safe mixing and application of pesticides.
The Horticulture Assistant works under the supervision and direction of the County Horticulturist, independently or with other Park Staff, implementing a wide variety of work orders for programs and projects for: - Community Park and Natural Resource maintenance and enhancement;
- Historic landscape maintenance and restoration;
- Invasive species and vegetation management (on land and water);
- Native plant production for Chesapeake Bay wetland restoration;
- Other Park Maintenance Crews, Civic Organizations and Government Agencies;
- Other related duties including snow removal, brush cutting, grass cutting etc as required.
Requirements: - High school graduation;
- Possess and maintain a Valid Maryland Driver's License;
- Ability to pass County Drug Test and Criminal Background Check;
- Willingness to work with and apply pesticides;
- Ability to become and maintain a Maryland Department of Agriculture Registered Pesticide Applicator under supervision of the Horticulturist;
- Ability to work independently and responsibly; follow written and oral instructions;
- Preference will be given to individuals with hands-on experience in all phases of Landscape, Grounds and/or Natural Resource maintenance and knowledge of specialized tools, power and application equipment;
- Willingness to work year-round outdoors and under a wide variety of challenging weather conditions/circumstances in community parks, sensitive historic and environmental properties, woodlands, marshes, wetlands, and water.
