Required Minimum Playing Time

As we approach the winter sports season it is imperative that all youth players participant within our Department’s mandatory participation guidelines for all County-sponsored youth sports. These guidelines shall be used in league and tournament play except in cases of illness or injury.

Remember that the game is for the children, and children play sports to have fun. A recent study revealed that 72% of children would rather play for a losing team than sit on the bench of a winning team. The main point of youth sports is participation by everyone, not impressive won-lost records.

The Department has informed all County-sponsored youth sports coaches of the participation guidelines. As a coach, you are entrusted with a very important responsibility. You are challenged to nurture children in learning many of life’s lessons - teamwork, respect for authority, winning and losing graciously, self-confidence, discipline, and more. It is crucial to place the emotional and physical well being of your players ahead of a personal desire or external pressure to win.

The mandatory participation guidelines have widespread support among the community-based organizations throughout the County. I believe our Department’s efforts to elevate sportsmanship have led to improvements in the quality of recreational sporting activities throughout the County.

Parents should be aware of the their child’s playing time on the field. If you believe that your child is not participating within the stated guidelines please contact the appropriate Athletic Supervisor at
(410) 222-7865 to discuss this matter further.  Always remember Rule #1 is to have fun!
