Message from the Director -
Cheerleading a County-Sponsored Sport

November 15, 2005

Dear Parents and Guardians of Youth Cheerleaders:

Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks is pleased to announce that cheerleading is now recognized as a County-sponsored sport.  This recognition came as a result of the Anne Arundel Youth Cheerleading Association (AAYCA) initiating discussions about adding their sport to our Department’s slate of sanctioned athletic programs.  This new partnership with AAYCA is a great opportunity for our Department to expand its youth sports program and for the betterment of the cheerleading community as a whole.

Through our new partnership with AAYCA, we will work together to ensure that cheerleading will have a bright future in Anne Arundel County by encouraging all cheerleading organizations to participate.  Our staff will provide support to AAYCA in the coordination of events, standardization of rules, administration and advertising.  AAYCA will function as an advisory board by providing oversight on all matters impacting cheerleading throughout the County.

As you well know, participating in cheerleading requires many hours of practice and dedication for our young athletes. Our Department is committed to the belief that participation in athletic and recreational programs should be fun for everyone – a great opportunity to learn new skills, meet new friends and be part of a team.  These are the principals that guide our mission.

I hope you agree that this overdue recognition of cheerleading as a County-sponsored sport will have a positive impact on the future of the cheerleading community.  For further information contact Jacque Hurman, Recreation Supervisor, at (410) 222-7865.

Sincerely,
Dennis Callahan
