OPENING DAY. Saturday, May 5, 2007 marked Opening Day for the Challenger Baseball league at Freetown Park. Nineteen youth, sporting bright yellow shirts and red hats, participated in the season opener. The day began with Recreation Administrator, Franklin Chaney, interviewing several eager players for the “Anne Arundel County Week In Review” cable TV program. Michael Vennik, Tyler Shannon and Shannon Smith enthusiastically offered their views on playing baseball in the Challenger league. Recreation and Parks Director, Frank Marzucco, beamed with pride as he addressed parents, friends and league players regarding the Department’s sponsorship of the program. He presented an Executive Citation from County Executive John Leopold to Challenger Baseball coach Terri Hamrick-Oeschger. Ms. Hamrick-Oeschger has been a valuable part of the program, assisting with registration as well as coaching for the team. Mr. Marzucco introduced County Councilman Daryl Jones and expressed appreciation for the Councilman’s leadership in bringing the league to Anne Arundel County. Councilman Jones and participant Emily Stoughton shared the honor of throwing out the first pitch to start the game. Play ball!
