| Arundel Cup Scholarship for 2004 Graduating Seniors |
The Anne Arundel Youth Soccer League and Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks announced the recipients of the Arundel Cup Scholarship for 2004 Graduating Seniors. The Arundel Cup tournament was created to provide funding for the scholarship. The tournament runs concurrently with the regular Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks Fall Soccer from September through November each year.
Dennis Callahan, Director of Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks and the Anne Arundel Youth Soccer League presented four $1,000 scholarships to be used for tuition, books or related school fees. The winners of the 2004 Scholarships are: Brian Murray of Broadneck High School, Jason Koller of Southern High School, Katherine Devlin of Chesapeake High School, and Janna Queior of Broadneck High School. |

| The Beebe Castro Award from Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks |
The Anne Arundel County, Department of Recreation and Parks is pleased to announce the selection of Dana Sutphin, from the Davidsonville Athletic Association and South River Recreation Association, as the 2003 recipient. The Beebe Castro Award is given to a person who has volunteered his/her time to promote and enhance opportunities for girls in recreational sports in Anne Arundel County. The Recipient has also demonstrated and promoted Positive Sportsmanship. |

| Tobacco Free Sports Team Challenge Winner |
The Anne Arundel County Department of Health, in partnership with the Department of Recreation and Parks, recently recognized the Davidsonville Terps, a basketball team for 10 to 12 year old boys, and the Maryland Academy of Youth Sports, basketball team for 12 to 14 year old girls, as the winter winners of the tobacco free sports challenge, which is part of the Tobacco Free Sports initiative. The Tobacco Free Sports initiative educates children on County recreational teams about the dangers of smoking and encourages athletes to pledge to remain tobacco-free. Coaches are provided with educational materials that emphasize the dangers of smoking and a "Tobacco Free Sports Promise" pledge card. The recreational coaches talk with their teams about the dangers of tobacco and encourage team members to remain tobacco free by signing a team pledge. Teams that participate are eligible for a random drawing and the winning team receives sports bags for every team member. |

| Tobacco Free Sports Team Challenge Winner |
The Lightning Sticks 8-10 year old girls field hockey team from Crofton won the Tobacco Free Sports Team Challenge. All twelve players signed the Tobacco Free Sports Promise certificate pledging to remain tobacco free. Their coach presented a tobacco prevention presentation during a practice this season. The team is pictured, along with Recreation and Parks Director,Dennis Callahan, coaches and parents, holding their new sports bags. The team was presented with their grand prize at the Coaches Clinic on November 19, 2003 at Old Mill High School. |

Tobacco-Free Zone Presentation |
Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at Kinder Farm Park was the unveiling of the Tobacco-Free Zone sign. The official launch of Anne Arundel Recreation and Parks Tobacco-Free Zones. The Tobacco Free Zone policy restricts the use of tobacco products on more than 300 Anne Arundel County fields and parks. |
