Q: How do I get my property back if its been stored in Property Management?
A: Those who have property other than firearms in police custody should respond to the Property Management Section to retrieve their property only after the Property Management Section has notified them in writing that they may do so. Before property can be released to the owner or finder, the officer who recovered the property must execute a release and notify the Property Management Section. If the property recovered is evidence of a crime, it may not be released until the case has been adjudicated unless the recovering officer has indicated otherwise.

An owner or finder of property will be notified in writing of the release of his or her property immediately upon release and is given thirty days to retrieve it. If the owner has not responded, a second notice is sent and the owner is again given thirty days to retrieve it. If the owner has not responded within that 60-day period and has not made arrangements with the Property Management Section, the property will be disposed of according to law.

Before firearms that have been recovered can be returned to the owner he or she must complete an application and must meet the requirements to be legally entitled to possess a firearm under Maryland and Federal Law. Once an officer has released a firearm, the Property Management Section will notify the owner of the release and will provide a detailed description of what must be done in order to have the firearm returned to them.

If you have any questions or concerns you may contact Ms. Kim Natcher at (410) 222-8690.
