Serious Crash in Eastern
SERIOUS INJURY PEDESTRIAN COLLISION BALTIMORE
On June 16, 2014, at approximately 12:14 p.m., the Anne Arundel County Traffic Safety Section responded to a report of a pedestrian struck on southbound Ft. Smallwood Road near Kembo Road in Baltimore.
The investigation determined that the pedestrian, John Scott Ford Jr., was performing work on a water line in the slow lane of Ft. Smallwood Rd near Kembo Rd. Mr. Ford had stopped his work vehicle (Chevrolet) approximately ten (10) feet from his location. Mr. Ford’s vehicle was towing a fully operational and activated arrow board that instructed traffic to move to the left lane.
Christopher Clark Rabel, operating a 2014 Freightliner Tractor with a 28 foot trailer failed to see the operational arrow warning board and struck the board. Mr. Rabel’s vehicle continued moving forward and the impact pushed the board into the Chevrolet and struck the pedestrian. All vehicles remained in contact before coming to rest with the pedestrian under the front of the Chevrolet.
Mr. Ford was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma where he is listed in serious but stable condition. The cause of the crash appears to be driver inattention on the part of the Tractor Trailer driver. Speed does not appear to be a factor in this crash. This investigation continues.
