Metal Theft Public Service Announcement

Over the past few years, metal thefts have increased throughout the United States due to a significant rise in scrap metal prices. Anne Arundel County has experienced this increase and as a result has created a centralized Metal Theft Unit within the Criminal Investigation Division.  The Unit has been tasked with investigating crimes where the theft of metals such as copper, aluminum, steel, batteries, and catalytic converter components is the motive.  Anne Arundel County is currently experiencing a large number of commercial, tractor, marine and cell tower battery thefts as well as air conditioning, wire and copper/metal pipe thefts from residences for sale, businesses and vacant buildings.

Help us keep you from becoming a victim.  The Anne Arundel County Police Department is asking citizens and businesses to mark their marine, commercial, equipment and tractor batteries in some fashion.  This can be accomplished by etching an identification (registration or license) number on the battery, painting the battery with a unique marking, or utilizing other security methods.  Post construction, storage and commercial areas with “NO TRESPASSING” signs so that police on patrol can take action if they observe something suspicious within those areas.  In addition, attempt to reduce access to these areas by way of fencing or security measures. Inspect your property and equipment on a regular basis and report any theft immediately.
If you observe suspicious activity that may be related to metal theft or any other crime, do not hesitate to contact the police and provide as much detail of your observations that can be done in a safe manner. Dial 911 for a crime in progress or a non-emergency number at 410-222-8610.  People often observe suspicious activity and later find out that it was related to a crime.  It is our goal to work with those we serve to help reduce these crimes throughout the County.
